Timeline note: this is Cam’s POV at the time of the haulage run where Embry travels in Saint’s place.

Sometimes I wondered how I’d survived my life before Saint and Alexei had propped up the foundations. How I’d stayed home on my goddamn throne while Saint had fought in the shadows without me.

I hated him being sick. Worry for him ate me up inside. But I couldn’t deny having him safe in my bed made waiting for the others to come home easier to bear.

“Is not so bad,” Alexei told me over the phone. “Mateo is tough, and I do not think he has much to complain about right now.”

“Meaning?”

“He is holed up in a hotel room with the love of his life. If he does not come out a different man, I will be very surprised.”

“You’re never surprised.”

“That is not true. You should pay attention.”

I did pay attention. To everything. Trouble was, it was a lot. Even now, as I crossed the yard to the clubhouse and shouldered through the door, ignoring everyone, too drawn to Saint to give much of a fuck about anything else.

Too worried about my brothers on the road to notice the shiny lock on the residence door until I couldn’t open the fucking thing. “What the⁠—?”

“Something is wrong?”

“No. Just unexpected.” This shit had Saint all over it. He’d been fucking with random things for weeks now. Missing lightbulbs. Doors rehung to swing the opposite way. I’d given up trying to make it make sense. “If you were Saint’s brain and you conjured up a code for a combination lock, what would it be?”

“That is like asking how many hairs are on a dog.”

“I know. That’s why I asked you.”

“You cannot ask him?”

“I’m going to.” I turned my back to the locked door and leaned against it. “Just wondered if you were operating on the same weirdo frequency today.”

Alexei laughed and it was the best sound in the world. “Not today, biker boy. I will speak to you after I have seen Mateo’s injury properly.”

He murmured something in Russian and hung up, leaving me to a phone screen lit up with a group chat message from Saint to the council. A six-number code with zero explanation for anyone who wasn’t at home to see the new lock.

I shook my head and turned to punch in the code.

The door clicked open.

I slipped through and shut it behind me. Then took the stairs two at a time.

Saint wasn’t in bed where I’d left him a few hours ago under Orla’s supervision. He was in Mateo’s room, crouched on the floor by the bed, rummaging underneath.

He didn’t look up as I filled the doorway, which annoyed me. Shook me. I needed to see his face. Check he wasn’t as horrifically pale as he’d been last night. As lifeless as he’d seemed when I’d found him on the bathroom floor.

I thought he was dead.

I’d only uttered those words to Rubi, knowing he’d say something ridiculous to make me feel better.
